Vinny Lecavalier And Keegan Lowe Drop The Mitts Twice, And Why That's Important

The Flyers lost 3-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes. Whatever. The season is over anyway so who cares. Plus Emery was in the net, which will touch on more a little later. But the biggest takeaway from last night’s game was 34-year-old Vinny Lecavalier dropping the mitts with 22-year-old Keegan Lowe not once, but twice last night. Sure, he kind of jumped Lowe in that 2nd fight Lowe is an asshole (as witnessed by the black eye he’s sporting in his Player Bio) and I’m sure he knew it was coming. Either way, Lecavalier has had himself a shit storm of a season and it’s nice to see he’s still willing to throw his body on the line out there.

For the first time in his hockey career, unassumingly since he first laced up a pair of skates, Lecavalier was healthy scratched this season. And he was scratched a ton. He has 8 goals and 12 assists in 57 games this year, and it’s been nothing but talks of trades and retirements from the fans and media in Philly. Just a terrible situation to be in as one of the former bests in the league. But you know how people say you should never go to bed angry? Well that’s what Vinny did here. Not only for himself, but for all of us. Because now everyone knows heading in to this offseason that at least Vinny still cares. At least he’s not completely checked out of the game of hockey. So who knows what will end up happening with him in the offseason. It would be great to see if they could move him somewhere where he could have more of a role, but I also wouldn’t hate seeing him in the top 6 if he stays in Philadelphia. Obviously you can’t expect a guy to put up any numbers if you’re constantly locking him down on the 4th line or in Healthy Scratch Purgatory.  If the Flyers bring in a new coach and let Lecavalier wheel a little in the top 6, maybe the team can finally get what they were looking for in him.

P.S. – Would have loved to have seen Round 3 go down in the parking lot. I give the advantage to Vinny there.
